About Us

About the Leon County
Historical Society

The Leon County Historical Society (LCHS) preserves and interprets historic communities established by Black farmers, builders, community leaders, and veterans in Leon County, Texas spanning the pre–Civil War and post–Civil War eras. Our work is grounded in preservation education, cultural landscape documentation, oral histories, and descendant-centered storytelling.

We protect places and memories that have too often been excluded from traditional preservation systems ensuring they remain visible and protected for future generations.

What We Do

LCHS documents historic sites, cultural landscapes, and community knowledge traditions connected to Black-founded townships across Leon County. Our work includes oral history preservation, preservation planning, education programming, and heritage learning visits that connect land, memory, and historical visibility

Projects & Partnerships

LCHS advances preservation through community-based projects and partnerships that strengthen documentation, education, and long-term stewardship of Leon County’s historic communities established by Black farmers, builders, community leaders, and veterans in Leon County, Texas—spanning the pre–Civil War and post–Civil War eras. We collaborate with descendants, local organizations, preservation specialists, and research institutions to ensure cultural landscapes and oral histories are protected and taught as essential Texas history.

Outsider Preservation Initiative

LCHS is a recipient of the Outsider Preservation Initiative in partnership with the UVA School of Architecture, made possible by the Mellon Foundation. This initiative supports community-centered preservation and documentation of underrepresented histories.

Through this work, LCHS strengthens cultural landscape preservation, oral history documentation, and descendant-centered interpretation connected to Leon County’s Black-founded townships—ensuring these places and stories remain visible, protected, and teachable for future generations.
